How YouTube revenue is estimated

Revenue = (Views / 1,000) x RPM

YouTube pays creators through RPM - revenue per mille, or per 1,000 views. Multiplying your total views by RPM and dividing by 1,000 gives your estimated total earnings for any period.

RPM already accounts for YouTube's 45% revenue share and includes all monetization sources: display and overlay ads, skippable and non-skippable video ads, channel memberships, Super Chats, and YouTube Premium revenue.

You can find your actual RPM in YouTube Studio under Analytics > Revenue. Use that figure here for accurate projections based on your channel's real data.

Views
Total video views in the period - includes both monetized and non-monetized views.
RPM
Revenue per 1,000 views - your actual take-home earnings after YouTube's cut.
Estimated revenue
Total creator earnings for the period based on views and RPM.

Common questions

Where do I find my RPM on YouTube?

Go to YouTube Studio, click Analytics, then the Revenue tab. Your RPM is shown there alongside CPM and estimated revenue. RPM is the most accurate figure to use for revenue projections.

Why does my revenue vary month to month?

Ad rates fluctuate by season, niche, audience geography, and advertiser demand. Q4 (Oct-Dec) typically sees the highest RPMs as ad budgets peak before the holidays. January usually sees a significant drop.

How many views do I need to earn $1,000 a month?

It depends on your RPM. At $3 RPM you need about 333,000 views. At $8 RPM you need about 125,000. Use this calculator with your own RPM to get a specific target.
